Current Project Overview

AWA

Automated Weapons Assembly

Project Leads:  Foster-Miller, Inc.; BAE Systems; General Dynamics Robotic Systems (three separate efforts)
Project Duration:  Feb 08 - Oct 08
(Phase I)
Picture of weapons assembly process

The objective of this FY-08 ONR project is to show transformation of individual weapons from their transportation & storage configuration to a ready service configuration and to deliver an integrated capability to safely breakout and/or build-up both All-Up-Round (AUR) and component based weapons into ready service weapons in very high sea states. The current process of un-packing weapons and/or weapon components from their stowage containers and readying them for use is extremely time consuming, labor intensive, and requires a significant amount of deck area (500-1,000 sq. ft. per weapon). Automating this process will enable air-capable ships to increase aircraft sortie generation rates (today, aircraft sortie rates are typically limited by weapon build-up and arming rates), while decreasing the manpower involved in the process. This ultimately provides increased operational flexibility to the force commander during the Force Employment phase of Seabased Warfare.

Project Status

The complete project, which is detailed in the solicitation statement of work, is composed of several milestone/event driven S&T phases to be completed over a 60-month period. The 8-month Phase I effort kicked-off in February 2008. This phase includes concept of operations, concept design of the full-scale system, modeling and simulation analysis and identification of ship impacts and risks. The three companies that were chosen for funding to complete Phase I are:

  • Foster-Miller, Inc., teamed with St. Onge, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Faculty Staff and AMSEC LLC

  • BAE Systems, teamed with PaR Systems and the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University

  • General Dynamics Robotic Systems, teamed with the University of Texas at Austin, Agile Planet Inc. and AMSEC LLC

Evaluation against project performance criteria at the end of Phase I could result in funding beyond the completion of the initial concept development effort for each of these companies.
